Ð԰ɵç̨ at COP 30

10 November - 21 November

Ð԰ɵç̨ will be holding a series of events to demand climate action and highlight issues as world leaders meet at COP 30 in the Amazon rainforest region of Belem, Brazil, from 10-21 November.

The 11 days of events will start on Monday, 10 November, as Professor Mike Kagioglou, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Planning, Research and Innovation officially launches Ð԰ɵç̨ @ COP 30 and the university’s £1.3 million National Lottery funded project to embed sustainability into deprived city communities.

Students and staff will also get the chance to take direct action on the climate, put forward ideas to improve sustainability at the university and honour those at Ð԰ɵç̨ who have gone the extra mile at the prestigious Ð԰ɵç̨ SDG Awards Night.

 

  1. Launch of LEAF and Ð԰ɵç̨ @ COP 30 | Monday 10 November

    Official launch of the £1.3m National Lottery funded project to lead a major new community-driven climate initiative aimed at embedding sustainability in some of the city’s most deprived neighbourhoods. The three-year scheme, called Leicester Environmental Action and Future (LEAF), will bring together five grassroots organisations working with diverse communities across the city.

  2. SDG Awards Launch | Tuesday 11 November

    The official launch and call for nominations for the SDG Awards Night in early December. The categories this year have been revamped with the success of the SDG Fellows in mind and there will also be an announcement of a similar scheme for Ð԰ɵç̨ students.

  3. Sustainable Finance and Investment | Wednesday 12 November

    Are you interested in learning more about sustainable finance and investment? Then drop in to the Ð԰ɵç̨ Trading Floor, HU0.37. There will be leaflets and guides available for self-study, and we have two sessions where you can get an overview of shareholder activism, sustainability reporting, divestment strategies such as fossil fuel-free funds, and an introduction to Bloomberg certificates. There is no need to book – just turn up.

  4. 30 for 30 | Wednesday 12 November

    Staff and students are being challenged to come up with 30 ideas to improve sustainability at Ð԰ɵç̨ to mark COP 30. The 30 shortlisted ideas will then be presented to university authorities for evaluation before deciding whether they can be implemented on campus. This Campus Collective event will be introduced by Leicester textiles magnate Gurdev Mattu, whose life experiences have given him a passion for sustainability.

  5. Civic Investment in Driving Sustainable Communities | Thursday 13 November

    Professor Rachel Granger leads this seminar on why civic investment is pivotal to developing sustainable communities. Increasingly, it is referring to the imaginative models, through which local people are empowered to become primary investors and stakeholders in a city’s development plans. Launching a report What Works in Civic Investment, this event will explore the role of local people as primary investors in community municipal investments, community bonds, impact investing, and crowdfunding, which are revolutionising urban renewal programmes.

  6. Digital Product Passport for Sustainable Practices | Thursday 13 November

    This seminar will explore how digital innovation can drive transparency, circularity, and sustainability across product life cycles. The session will discuss the shift from linear to non-linear (circular) economies, highlight current challenges in sustainable supply chains, and introduce the concept and processes of the Digital Product Passport (DPP). Drawing on recent research and a real-world use, the talk will discuss DPP adoption and outline key strategies and future directions for sustainable industry transformation.

  7. Sustainable cities of the future | Tuesday 18 November

    This event brings together all the global academic hubs for SDG 11, which is chaired by Ð԰ɵç̨. Student and academic guest speakers from Ð԰ɵç̨ will be joined by fellow SDG 11 academic hubs in Cologne, Germany; Porto Alegre, Brazil; and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to talk on the global cities of the future. After short presentations, the online audience at the Urban Frontlines: Shaping Sustainable Cities for the Future event will be involved in a discussion and question and answer session.

  8. My City, My Impact | Wednesday 19 November

    This SDG 11 event is a student-led activity focused on urban sustainability involving all Ð԰ɵç̨’s partner universities around the world organised by TNE. This initiative encourages students to explore sustainability challenges in your city, share ideas, and collaborate with students across institutions. Work will be featured in a two-hour online session, celebrating youth voices and action for SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

  10. Building Resilience in Communities | Wednesday 19 November

    The presentation of the findings from the CAPS (community, academics, public sector) research project on building resilience with Leicester’s communities as part of Ð԰ɵç̨’s work as the global academic hub for SDG 11 Sustainable. This event, which is also part of Ð԰ɵç̨’s Research Festival, is also a call to researchers interested in the issues identified by the city’s community groups and presented in this report.

  11. SDG Awards Night | Friday 5 December

    An event to celebrate all the work across Ð԰ɵç̨ on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and mark one year of the launch of the SDG Fellows at the start of COP 29. Seven awards will be handed out for the SDG Project of the Year (all SDGs); SDG 11 Project of the Year; SDG Idea of the Year (from those submitted to 30 for 30 event); and SDG Fellow of the Year (three awards categories – professional services; teachers; academics, researchers, knowledge exchange).
